What is Chromium and why do we need it?
Chromium is a metallic element that humans require in very small amounts. It is thought to influence how the hormone insulin behaves in the body. Levels of Chromium can affect metabolism, and the amount of energy we get from food.
Where can I get Chromium from?
Chromium can be found in:-
- nuts
- potatoes
- cereal products
- pulses
- brewer's yeast
- whole grains, such as, wholemeal bread and whole oats
- lentils
- broccoli
How much Chromium do we need?
Around 25mcg of Chromium per day should be enough for adults.
You should be able to get all the Chromium you need by eating a varied and balanced diet.
What happens if we consume too much Chromium?
The jury's out on this because there's not enough evidence for professionals to come to a firm conclusion.
What does the Department of Health advise?
"You should be able to get all the Chromium you need by eating a varied and balanced diet.
If you take Chromium supplements, don't take too much as this might be harmful.
Having 10mg or less a day of Chromium from food and supplements is unlikely to cause any harm."
