Yummy vegan options in Côte Brasserie
The myth: “French food can’t be veganised”
I was in Watford, again (more about this below) and I decided to have a look at the Côte Brasserie’s menu. I can’t tell you how flabbergasted I was when I saw that they had French Onion soup and that it was vegan!
I was introduced to French Onion Soup about 30 years ago and I absolutely loved it! After shifting to a vegan lifestyle, I really thought I would never have it again.
This changed in 2016 when hubby surprised me with a trip to Paris. I can’t tell you how worried I was! The last time I had been to Paris, I was vegetarian and struggled to find many options. I had all sorts of thoughts about whether he’d researched vegan options or not etc etc. Anyway, he knew exactly what he was doing and that’s when I had French Onion Soup for the first time (after going vegan) and I can tell you that it was absolutely amazing! However, I’d not seen it in the UK, so I was well-chuffed to see it in Watford!
My first meal at Côte Brasserie
Upon finding out that the soup was vegan, my friend saw the look on my face and noticed the change in pitch. It was a no-brainer. We asked if they could seat and they said yes! I was so excited!
Here’s what we ordered:
French Onion Soup: Rustic French onion soup, Comté croûtes
Warm Beetroot Salad: Black garlic aioli, pistachio, endive, sourdough croûtes
Squash Taboulé: Roasted butternut squash & courgette, giant harissa couscous, chickpeas, spinach, rocket, coconut yoghurt (Inspired by Marseille’s North African quarter)
Jerusalem Artichoke Risotto: Champagne vinegar caramel, mushrooms, chiffonade spinach
Chocolate Salted Caramel Tart with vanilla ice cream
The food was delicious, the service was fab and the atmosphere was great too. I’d definitely go back.
Why I said I was in Watford again
We’ve been eating out in Watford a fair bit, recently. We like going there for a number of reasons.
Boom Battle Bar is a great place to play games and have fun. I’ve been there with hubby and with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and we had a great time
We had a big family meet-up which involved a few games at Hollywood Bowl and a meal. That was good fun!
There are a number of other places that we want to check out, such as, Rock Up, Football Fiesta and Puttshack
We like eating at Cassio Lounge, Wagamama, The Beech House and The Garden Rooms
Myth busting
This is another example of how easy it is to be vegan.
I’d love to hear about what you thought would be impossible after going vegan and whether you were pleasantly surprised like I was when I had vegan French Onion Soup.
