Make your closet kinder with The Compassionate Closet
I'd like you to meet Stephanie Boyd. After going vegan, her shift went from diet to lifestyle. She reflected on what she had in her wardrobe, and as a result of that; The Compassionate Closet was born! It's worth finding out what she does, why she does it and how she does it. It's an inspiring story!
What does The Compassionate Closet specialise in selling?
The Compassionate Closet offers vegan apparel, shoes, and accessories for men and women. We believe that good quality fashion should be created in a cruelty-free, sustainable, and responsible way.
Where is The Compassionate Closet based?
Although we’re primarily online (shipping worldwide), we are working hard to open a flagship store in the Colorado area soon.
What inspired you to create a business that solely focuses on vegan accessories, clothes and shoes?
My inspiration came from my own closet. After going vegan and scrutinising what was on my plate, it didn't take long before I turned my attention to my wardrobe. My closet was a cemetery full of wool, cashmere, leather, and silk — I was shocked and disappointed by the lifetime of cruel choices I had made. I was also saddened that animal materials (largely perceived as acceptable) are the foundation of the fashion world. So when I set out to revamp my closet, I quickly realised that, although there are vegan, cruelty-free, and fair-trade choices out there; you really have to search them out. That is when I decided to help bring vegan fashions to the marketplace and launch The Compassionate Closet!
How easy is it for you to source cruelty free ingredients for your products?
There is a lot of consideration that goes into the products we carry. We look for designers with the same values as us. Some of these values are ethics, sustainability, vegan, cruelty-free, and to give back to those who make the clothes, not forgetting that they should be awesome and stylish! We look for both well-known and aspiring brands, but they must be trusted brands. We want to support designers that are bringing sustainable styles to the forefront of the fashion world!
Do these ingredients effect the outcome in comparison with non-vegan goods?
Most vegan goods focus on quality, not quantity. Often they are more durable, greener, more ethical, and make a powerful statement than their animal-based competitors. For example, hemp fibre is one of the strongest and most durable natural textile fibres. Products made from hemp will outlast their competition by many years. We have only one planet. We seek styles that are less harmful to the environment, they must be of non-animal origin, and we want the designers to be socially responsible, ensuring that we are caring for those down the line whom many of our everyday choices affect.
For someone who hasn't bought your products before, is there a particularly popular one that you can name?
Of course! For those wanting to show off their vegan values, check out our collection of jewellery by Christy Robinson Designs and our Apparel. For those simply wanting to add more compassion to their closet, all of shoes, apparel, and accessories will tick that box!
Is The Compassionate Closet owned by, or in partnership with, another company that tests on animals or sells non-vegan products?
No. We are not owned nor are we partnered with non-vegan companies. We are proud to work with designers with the same values as us.
Tell me a bit about yourself before you launched The Compassionate Closet?
I am a Colorado native, vegan, an animal lover, and a regular volunteer. I absolutely love being a member of the plant-strong community, meeting new compassionate pioneers whether they be vegans, naturalists, environmentalist or straight-edge, animal lovin’, tree-huggin’, ethically conscious shoppers! I am always so inspired their stories of health, compassion, and values!
What is your vision for the future of The Compassionate Closet?
Our goal is to help make vegan fashion mainstream. To counter fast, cruel, cheap fashion and the damaging patterns of fashion consumption. To help dress the world in style, which looks good, feels good, and does good!
Our goal is to continue expanding our product lines and to open a physical store soon.
