The Founder of Sigma Pharmaceuticals shares how shifting to a vegan diet saved him!
Who is Bharat Shah?
Dr. Bharat Shah is the primary founder of Sigma Pharmaceuticals. Here are few key bits of information about him:
He qualified as a pharmacist in 1971
He ran independent pharmacies before Sigma was created.
He founded the company in 1982 as a medicines and surgical dressings distribution business.
He is a distinguished fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
In 2013, he received a doctorate from the University of Bath for his services to pharmacy.
He was awarded a CBE in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to business, economic growth, exporting, the independent pharmacy sector, and philanthropy.
He is involved in philanthropic projects in the UK, India, and Kenya.
Sigma Pharmaceuticals sponsors a PhD project at the University of Bath to research the future of community pharmacy.
Bharat’s interview with Plant Based News
Oh my goodness! What an interesting 24 minutes. The interview was SO good, I listened to it twice!
Bharat was diagnosed with prediabetes when he was 30 years old. He began taking medication when he was around 35 years old and then 'progressed' to injections when he was 55. He was taught, and fully believed that, Type 2 Diabetes cannot be reversed.
Much to his surprise, he reversed it by changing his diet and lifestyle.
In the interview, he explains that the shifts he made resulted in him having to take less insulin, with the bonus of being able to reduce medication for high blood pressure.
Bharat explains why he believes that dairy has resulted in Cancer and autoimmune diseases.
He describes how traces of materials accumulate in the body and how dangerous they are for us.
People over profit
Sigma Pharmaceuticals earns over £280 million per year! I think it’s wonderful that he’s not hiding his experiences through fear that people will follow his lead, and no longer need medication.
Health organisations
Sadly, I'm not surprised to hear that the Department of Health and Diabetes UK didn't take notice of his plea to hear an alternative view about managing health issues, which would also help reduce how much the NHS spends on diabetes!
Money that could be better spent
The NHS spends over £10 billion a YEAR on diabetes. If organisations were open to learning from Bharat’s experiences and willing to guide people to make the shift, it could free up so much money!
The death of Pharma!
Would veganism result in the death of Pharma? I would love to hear your thoughts about Bharat’s response to this.
The interview
I haven’t summarised Bharat’s views because I think it’s best coming from him. So I encourage you to listen to the interview and I would love to hear from you afterwards.

“For an ethical vegan it doesn’t matter when we started eating meat and for how long, as animal exploitation is not avoided because this is the ‘natural’ thing to do, but the ‘moral’ thing to do. However, human biology helps vegans to thrive, rather than hinders them, which explains all the health benefits reported when people switch to a vegan diet.”
