Water: why not and how much?
Myths about water
I have heard so many things about water! Some of the things I've heard people say include:-
- we need to drink 2 or 3 litres of water per day
- we should only drink when we are thirsty
- water can't cause any harm
Below, you'll find out how often we need to drink and why we shouldn't drink too much.
Water is so important but there are a few 'buts'
We should avoid drinking water (or any other fluid) within 30 minutes of starting a meal, and we should wait 30 minutes after we have finished eating before we have a drink. This is because the water will reduce the effectiveness of our stomach acid, which will, in turn, inhibit digestion.
We shouldn't drink too much or too often because the nourishment that the body needs will get flushed out before we have a chance to absorb it.
How much should we drink?
A small glass every half an hour would be ideal. If this isn't possible, aim to drink a larger glass of water every hour.
What type of water is best?
It is better to drink filtered water, than water straight out of a tap.
