Find out how well we ate at The Republic of Noodles in Dehli
Are restaurants in India vegan-friendly or not?
I find this duality quite ironic. On the one hand, India is known for protecting cows and encouraging people to live in a non-violent way; yet consuming dairy, which is far from non-violent, is a symbol of status and wealth.
I've been told by many, including Indian residents, that India isn't vegan-friendly because 'everything has ghee, cheese or paneer in it,' whilst others who live there find this view to be ridiculous!
Getting a vegan meal in India
Our trips to India have usually involved staying in an Ashram, which is where we spend all our time. The staff in the kitchen understand what vegan means and when meals aren't 'vegan by accident' they find a way to make sure we're catered for.
I've eaten in a couple of restaurants on the highway and found that once the waiter understood what vegan meant, getting a meal wasn't difficult.
Other than that, we stayed in Delhi a few months ago, which is when we enjoyed a meal at The Republic of Noodles, which is part of Lemon Tree Premier.
Vegan options at The Republic of Noodles
About ten of us ate together that night and we all had different requirements. Some were vegan, others didn't eat certain root vegetables, whilst some liked spicy food and others couldn't tolerate 'too much' spice. We took all of this into account, ordered a number of dishes with different levels of spice, to share and really enjoyed the meal!
The staff were attentive, diligent and really wanted to make sure that we were all catered for. It was a lovely meal.
So when in Dehli...you know where to eat!
"Vegans must find it really hard to go on holiday and eat well"
I think not! Below you'll see some of the places that I've travelled to whilst being vegan. During those holidays, I didn't have to change what I was willing to eat, or fast because vegan food was lacking or eat salad and chips because they were the only options. I ate well and was quite spoilt for choice!
