Plant Shift

love ♥ living ♥ vegan

Following a plant-based or vegan lifestyle, is about food, drink, clothes, shoes, body treatments, hair products and more.

It's a conscious decision to think, walk and possibly, talk a better lifestyle.

I support individuals who are thinking about making the shift, as well as, those who have already begun their plant-based journey.

What to do with your non-vegan shoes and clothing when you're ready to say goodbye

What to do with shoes, clothes and furniture that isn't vegan

For those who like things to be clear and definite...I'm sorry. I don't think that there's one straightforward answer which will suit everyone.

What I did with the non-vegan things that I owner prior to going vegan

When I first became vegan, I had silk saris, leather chairs, leather seats in the car, woollen clothing etc. As I researched and learned more about non-plant based materials I decided not to buy any more of these products but I kept the ones I had.

Snippets from different speakers who share their reasons for advocating a vegan diet

In a previous post I mentioned that I like hearing why people make a shift towards a vegan diet or lifestyle. This is because the reasons tend to vary so much. The footage below shows summaries from a range of people who share why they made the shift to a vegan diet.

Can you think of any other reasons to go vegan?

More about this film...

The entire film lasts 30 minutes. It explores the benefits of being vegan. Some of these are: -

  • an exciting lifestyle

  • eating delicious food

  • consuming healthy food

  • tackling the ethics behind making this shift

  • global challenges that we face now and in the future.

It was produced by The Vegan Society.

Will you make the connection and become part of the solution?

Here, you can find out what made me transform my diet from one which included meat, to a vegetarian one, which was followed by a shift to a vegan diet.

"I just could not stand the idea of eating meat - I really do think that it has made me calmer.... People's general awareness is getting much better, even down to buying a pint of milk: the fact that the calves are actually killed so that the milk doesn't go to them but to us cannot really be right, and if you have seen a cow in a state of extreme distress because it cannot understand why its calf isn't by, it can make you think a lot." Kate Bush

What are the ethical reasons for following a vegan diet?

One of the things that I've found interesting whilst on this journey, shifting from a vegetarian diet to vegan one, is the variety of reasons that exist for doing so. Some of these reasons include, to heal or save the environment, to feel healthier, to cure bodily conditions, to pacify the effect of allergies and ethics. This video discusses the ethical reasons for following a plant-based diet.

How the environment reacts to what we eat, how we grow it and what we waste

There's a lot of debate about how our choices and actions have an impact on the environment. It effects everyone in one way or another and because, our motivations are different, reaching a solution that all parties will be happy with, is a hard task. The video below sums up how our dietary choices, the way we meet this demand, and how we deal with waste, impacts on the environment.

A few points to look out  for as you watch the video:-

  1. How much of the greenhouse emissions are caused by dairy and meat?
  2. How much of the greenhouse emissions are caused by aviation?
  3. What is the one of the primary causes of water table pollution in the U.S.?
  4. Which method of fishing is described as not harming the environment?

A global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change, a UN report said today. As the global population surges towards a predicted 9.1 billion people by 2050, western tastes for diets rich in meat and dairy products are unsustainable, says the report from United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) international panel of sustainable resource management. It says: "Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products. Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat. A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products."
